Scripture: “Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” – Colossians 2:7
Examination of Chapter: Paul is telling the believers in Colossae that they need to be strong in their faith. He reminds them that they have everything they need in Christ. Additionally, he warns them to not fall into the false doctrines of others, including the worshiping of angels. Their completeness is found in Jesus, and they should walk as such.
Application: As I walked along a trail, I noticed a lot of the trees had exposed roots that had stabilized each tree upon a huge granite boulder. In an area where melting snow and fierce storms occur each year, many plants with shallow root bases run the risk of being washed away, especially in this area with steep inclines and a narrow gorge. These massive tree roots encircled the 3-ton rocks and became immovable. With a strong foundation, the trees grew tall and strong.
This reminded me of my Christian life. I must be grounded on the Rock. 1 Corinthians 10:4 clearly states the identify of my spiritual rock. “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” To begin my growth, my roots first cling to the Rock the moment I accepted Christ as my Saviour. To continue growing in my faith, I must faithfully read the Word of God and pray, and then my roots will grow and tighten their grip on the Rock. Then to solidify my position, the Bible explains that my faith must be tested. 1 Peter1:7 states, “That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:” When my faith is tested, God’s strength is manifested to bring me through the situation. Each time I see God work, the roots of my faith become stronger and more secure in my Rock.
Jesus spoke of the wise man and the foolish man. One built his house upon the Rock and survived the storms of life. One built his house on sand, a weak foundation, and the storms destroyed him. Psalm 18:2 states, “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.” When I choose to root my faith in Jesus, I find everything I need because “He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.” (Psalm 62:2). I am standing firm on the solid ROCK!
Moments with God: My dearest heavenly Father, thank You for so many reminders in nature of Your majesty and Your power. Thank You for the spiritual lessons found in huge boulders and large trees! You are everywhere in this world. Help me to always remember to look for You and learn of You in Your creation. In Jesus’ precious name, I pray. Amen.
